About This Set
Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! Heart! Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, gives five teenagers from around the world magic rings, and when they combine their powers they summon Captain Planet, a superhero who takes on the polluters and eco-villains threatening the planet.
Created by Ted Turner and Barbara Pyle, the series premiered in 1990 with LeVar Burton as Kwame, Whoopi Goldberg as Gaia and a star-studded line-up of villain voices, including Ed Asner, Jeff Goldblum, Meg Ryan, Martin Sheen, Tim Curry and Sting. It wasn’t afraid of serious subjects, either: “A Formula for Hate” was one of the first children’s cartoons to deal directly with HIV/AIDS.
The Captain Planet and the Planeteers complete animated series DVD set comes on 5 discs and has all 65 episodes from the original three seasons: nearly 22 hours of uncut, digitally remastered animation. Season by season, that’s 26, 26 and 13 episodes. The discs are region free and play on any DVD player in the world, with interactive menus that take you straight to any episode. Audio is in English only, with no subtitles.

I watched Captain Planet with my kids, and they were hooked! The series’ timeless message about environmental conservation resonated well with them. The humor in some episodes had us all laughing, especially when Captain Planet says, “The power is yours!” It’s delightful to have this series on physical media, allowing us to enjoy it without relying on internet connectivity. A fantastic buy for family bonding over eco-consciousness!

The DVD set arrived sooner than expected in secure packaging. The digital remastering is noticeable and appreciated. However, a subtitles option would have been a nice addition for accessibility. I enjoyed revisiting Gaia’s wisdom and the Planeteers’ adventures. This physical DVD set beats streaming any day, plus it’s a fantastic conversation starter when guests spot it on my shelf.

The Captain Planet DVD set brought back a flood of childhood memories. The A/V quality is decent, given the age of the series. The interactive menus are intuitive, making episode selection a breeze. The artwork on the DVDs and menus brought a smile to my face. It was a joy reliving Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ crusade against pollution. This set is a worthy buy for any 90s kid or environmentalist!
